Ampep plc is one of the worlds leading producer of precision plain bearing products. Located in the south west of England, Ampep produces bearings for some of the most demanding aerospace bearing applications. Established in 1963, Ampep is now a subsidiary of Sarma an SKF company. Ampep’s expertise in the aerospace field have also led to unmatched success in such areas as motor sport, rail, fighting vehicles and marine systems.
Many of Ampep’s products have been world firsts in terms of gaining performance benefits over competing products. Significant investments have been made over the years into research and development to maintain this edge thus giving clients bearings, which can provide longer maintenance cycles, and less down time. Ampep also offers an experienced and extensive design service often for difficult and demanding applications.

One of Ampep’s world recognized strengths is that of spherical bearings in helicopter
applications, particularly rotor head control. Ampep’s XLNT system is testament to the
continuing customer focus and R & D commitment. Ampep’s XLNT system comprises of a
ceramic-coated self-lubricating spherical plain bearing, which provides significant
extended life characteristics. This system lends itself particularly well to helicopter
rotor head control where loads are high and the frequency of oscillation is rapid. Wear
under these conditions using standard products is a burden most manufacturers and end
users have to endure. XLNT can lesson the burden by increasing life performance.
The ceramic coating and liner combination meets the requirements of paragraph
3.17.4.5 of SAE
AS81819. Current helicopter applications include August A109, AB139, A129, Eurocopter
EC225, NH90, and the GKN Westland Lynx.
